Pioneer FHE

  • For this week's FHE we are going to talk about pioneers, tell family members that you are going to have to leave your house, ask them what things they would take with them if they had to leave and not come back. You could even have them gather up some items if you wanted to. Now tell them that your only mode of transportation is your feet and a wagon. I am going to have my little ones place the items in their wagon so they can get a feel for what it must have been like. Will they need to reevaulate what they take with them?
  • Explain to family members that many of the early saints (and may be even your own relatives) were challenged with this problem.
  • Use GAK pictures 409-415 to talk about pioneers with your family, or share some of your own families pioneer stories.
  • Finally have a treasure hunt to help teach your family about some of the things that pioneers encoutered.
Additional activities (we are going to do these at our park day with our friends on the 24th of July)

Make covered wagons (from the July 2007 Friend Magazine (pg. 36-37)
Play some pioneer games 1. Three legged race, tie inside legs of two people together and have them race against other pairs of people.
2. Chain Tag, in this game, two people are it; they clasp one another's hands, and they begin chasing the others. When they tag someone they link hands too, making the chain three people long. The chain grows longer as more people are tagged.
